Stuff We Know (and stuff THEY Should Know)
MINDSET and SKILLSET…
HIRING and TRAINING and COACHING…
For the BUSINESS OWNER and ENTREPRENEUR finding (and keeping) and growing GREAT TALENT is always on the CHALLENGES list it seems.
As one coach would always tell his players, “My job is to FIND SOMEONE BETTER than you. Your job is to make sure I CAN’T!”
I was just having a conversation this week with a business owner client and a sales manager about people and teams and winners and RESULTS.
The owner was telling me about a recent hire that was turning out to be a WINNER! Some of the things he talked about in his interview were CLUES that made the candidate STAND OUT compared to many of the other interviewees.
The Sales Manager was chiming in on the differences in age in his producers and how many of his top producers were “aging out” toward retirement with some he felt even COASTING toward that retirement when he knew they could deliver greater RESULTS and had done so in the past.
The differences between BOOMERS and MILLENIALS is a real thing in The Marketplace. Greater knowledge/wisdom/evidence vs. more Tech Savvy/Energetic/etc. and so on.
One LEADER remarked to me…“We don’t need to be TOLD, but sometimes we need to be REMINDED!”
We started talking about characteristics and strengths and HOW THEY EACH THINK and began making a list of FUNDAMENTALS and behaviors they wanted in even the newest of hires.
Here’s a part of the list…that ANYONE could do. If only they CHOOSE to.
PROMPT (Being On TIME)
Work ETHIC and a SENSE OF URGENCY
EFFORT (LACK of vs. MAXIMUM)
Energetic/Exuding ENERGY
MINDSET over attitude (most everyone THINKS they have a good attitude)
PASSION and displaying a GENUINE love for what they do and being GREAT at it.
Being COACHABLE (more than just training)
Being PREPARED
Doing MORE than expected or just that little EXTRA
I’m sure you could add a few more to the list but we ended up talking about TWO THINGS that provided an UMBRELLA of sorts for the list…
MINDSET and SKILLSET!
And the FUNDAMENTALS of work and jobs and positions that mostly stay the SAME even while many things may CHANGE.
And as leaders making one of THEIR FUNDAMENTALS being what I call “PERSONAL CONVERSATIONS” with individuals. Both those who may be UNDERPERFORMING (at the time) and those who were living out the list above in producing above average RESULTS.
I’ve been a part of many of those personal conversations that became SEMINAL events that totally turned things around. For the team or organization, and for the individual.
If you have an experience or story around this kind of experience, I’d LOVE to hear about it. You can email me at Leader@MichaelYork.com
